The doctoral comprehensive examination is criticized for its potential harm to professional development because it fosters a myth of closure by encouraging students to believe that achievement of comprehensiveness is necessary to pass exams and achieve the doctorate. The comprehensive exam should be reexamined in light of its potential harm. (Author)
