Staff Peer Relationships and the Socialization Process of New Professionals: A Quantitative Investigation
Strayhorn, Terrell L.
College Student Affairs Journal, v28 n1 p38-60 2009
Prior research on student affairs professionals has focused largely on the nature of student affairs work with most attention given to mid- and senior-level administrators. Thus, relatively little is known about new professionals and their socialization to the student affairs profession. Based on a multivariate analysis of survey data from a sample of 74 new professionals, this study found that the frequency and nature of new professionals' engagement with staff peer and non-staff peers varies. Additionally, while frequent and supportive staff peer relationships were positively associated , with new professionals' job satisfaction, they were inversely related to one's intention to leave his/her current institution or the profession altogether. Implications for future research, as well as strategies that might be established by institutions that employ new professionals, adopted by senior personnel who supervise new professionals, or promoted among new professionals for support of each other are highlighted at the end of the article.
