P-16 Initiative Grant. Final Report Summary: Fiscal Year 2005
Illinois Community College Board
P-16 Initiative Grant funding is intended to allow community colleges to address the need to strengthen student preparation within the P-16 education spectrum in Illinois in two ways: (1) Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment; and (2) Teacher Preparation and Professional Development. Regarding (1): In Fiscal Year 2005, $1,279,000 was allocated to the system through the P-16 Initiative grant. The bulk of the grant was used to support the dual credit/dual enrollment component, serving 19,210 secondary students who enrolled in a total of 8,935 college-level courses, representing a 7.3% increase in enrollments over FY04 and a 136.7% increase in enrollments since the inception of the grant in FY01. Regarding (2): In recognition of the vital role that community colleges play in teacher preparation and professional development, this component of the P-16 Initiative allows colleges to use funds to expand or enhance related activities. Fiscal year 2005 was the third year in which grant funds were available for this purpose. While colleges used most of their P-16 Initiative grant funds to provide continuing support to dual credit/dual enrollment initiatives, six Illinois colleges used $51,009, or 4% of the total allocation, for the P-16 Initiative grant to support activities related to teacher preparation and/or professional development. A breakdown of FY05 P-16 Initiative Grant Funding by region is provided in this report.
