Macedo-Rouet, Monica; Braasch, Jason L. G.; Britt, M. Anne; Rouet, Jean-Francois – Cognition and Instruction, 2013
In two experiments, we examined fourth and fifth graders' comprehension of the source of information in texts presenting controversial issues. In Experiment 1, participants read short texts in which two people presented different arguments regarding an issue. Participants identified who said what and evaluated each source's knowledge of the issue.…

Li, Xiaobao; Ding, Meixia; Capraro, Mary Margaret; Capraro, Robert M. – Cognition and Instruction, 2008
This study reports findings from comparative samples of sixth-grade Chinese and U.S. students' interpretations of the equal sign. Ninety-eight percent of the Chinese sample correctly answered 4 items indicating conceptions of equality and provided conceptually accurate explanations. In contrast, only 28% of the U.S. sample performed at this level.…

Sarama, Julie; Clements, Douglas H.; Swaminathan, Sudha; McMillen, Sue; Gonzalez Gomez, Rosa M. – Cognition and Instruction, 2003
Investigated the development among fourth-graders of two-dimensional space concepts within a mathematics unit on grids, coordinates, and rectangles. Found that students' knowledge of grid and coordinate systems related to levels of competence in number sense, spatial-geometric relationships, and the ability to discriminate and integrate the two…

Engle, Randi A.; Conant, Faith R. – Cognition and Instruction, 2002
Proposes that fifth-graders' emergent and sustained controversy in a unit on endangered species from a "Fostering Communities of Learners" classroom exemplifies productive disciplinary engagement. Shows how engagement was supported by the students' and teacher's treatment, by students having authority to resolve the issue while being accountable…

Toth, Eva Erdosne; Klahr, David; Chen, Zhe – Cognition and Instruction, 2000
Developed and tested a cognitive theory-based intervention teaching a procedure for designing simple controlled experiments to fourth graders. Found that the intervention produced significant gains in students' ability to create controlled experiments, provide valid justifications for their experiments, and evaluate experiments designed by others.…

Klein, Perry D. – Cognition and Instruction, 2000
Examined the cognitive processes through which writing contributes to science learning among elementary school students. Analyzed four aspects of students' verbal learning strategies: writing operations, transitional sequences among writing operations, text features, and strategies for generating content. Concluded that for elementary students,…

Saxe, Geoffrey B.; Gearhart, Maryl; Seltzer, Michael – Cognition and Instruction, 1999
This study analyzed relations between student achievement in the domain of fractions and the extent to which classroom practices are aligned with principles recommended by current reform frameworks. Hierarchical linear-model analyses revealed that alignment of classroom practices with reform principles was related to student achievement in problem…

Mitchelmore, Michael C. – Cognition and Instruction, 1998
Used realistic models of turning situations to study second, fourth, and sixth graders' concepts of turning and bending. Found that young students viewed turning (knob, doll, and door) as a movement, and bending (road bends) as a configuration. Many did not spontaneously interpret turning as a configuration or bending as a movement. Explored…

Zuckerman, Galina A.; Chudinova, Elena V.; Khavkin, Emil E. – Cognition and Instruction, 1998
Describes science curriculum for elementary children which incorporated Vygotskian approach to development of students' ability to engage in persistent, systematic inquiry. Discusses three factors: (1) instruction began by introducing ideas that are central and general to the discipline; (2) students invented and adapted cultural tools for…

White, Barbara Y.; Frederiksen, John R. – Cognition and Instruction, 1998
Evaluated the "ThinkerTools Inquiry Curriculum," a computer-enhanced, middle school science curriculum, to determine the impact of including the Reflective Assessment Process. Found that students' performance improved significantly on both physics and inquiry assessments. Controlled comparison revealed that students' learning was greatly…

Yerushalmy, Michal – Cognition and Instruction, 1997
Used software environment to examine algebra students' attempts to reformulate narratives using verbal and iconic lexical sets. Described how natural language text turns into a script of events and processes, how the qualitative graphic description of the script is sketched using iconic notations, and how the graph turns into a subject for…

Lehrer, Richard; Romberg, Thomas – Cognition and Instruction, 1996
Two experiments examined fifth-grade students' reasoning about data modeling: one involved development of hypermedia documents, the other, use of a simple randomization distribution to test students' hypotheses. Found that data construction and analysis provide an opportunity to involve students in the important enterprise of mathematical…

Roth, Wolff-Michael; Bowen, G. Michael – Cognition and Instruction, 1995
Examines perceptions of eighth graders in a science teaching environment in which they guide their own learning, frame problems for inquiry, design data collection procedures, and interpret and present data in a convincing fashion. Asserts that, in constructing their inquiries, students successfully negotiated courses of action and established…

Howe, Christine; And Others – Cognition and Instruction, 1995
Examined how task design influences the effectiveness of peer collaboration in facilitating students' conceptual change in physics. Subjects were 8- to 12-year olds studying heating and cooling. Results showed the general superiority of collaborative tasks that both facilitate critical testing and require rules; task designs deploying one feature…
