West, Richard F.; Stanovich, Keith E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Different tasks were compared using the same subjects, stimuli, and experimental methodology. The results indicate that the lexical-decision task does tend to produce greater inhibition effects than the naming task. (Author/PN)

Masson, Michael E. J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Findings indicate that, when skimming, readers find it difficult to perceptually select from a passage information that is relevant to their goal in skimming. There was a reaction time advantage for verification of gist-relevant information as opposed to details, which tended to increase with reading rate. (Author/PN)

Lupker, Stephen J.; Katz, Albert N. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Two experiments were undertaken to evaluate the influence of automatic semantic processing of pictures on word judgments. Results indicated that (1) perceptual factors influence responding in these types of tasks, (2) picture processing can facilitate word processing in some circumstances, and (3) incompatible background pictures can interfere…

Light, Leah L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Three experiments compared reasoning from new information in young and older adults. The findings suggest at least two sources for age-related differences in reasoning from new information: poorer fact memory and reduced capacity in working memory. (Author/PN)

Mayer, Richard E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Equation problems elicited a strategy in which the subject attempted to isolate the X variables on one side of the equation, whereas word problems elicited a strategy in which the subject attempted to reduce the expression. These results suggest that problem format influences the type of strategy used to solve algebra problems. (Author/PN)

Sweller, John; Levine, Marvin – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
The operation of means-ends analysis (MEA) involves attempts at reducing differences between problem states and the goal state. It was paradoxically found that the more problem solvers knew of the goal state, the less they learned of the problem structure during the solution process. (PN)

Schoenfeld, Alan H.; Herrmann, Douglas J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Experts' perceptions of mathematical problem structures were compared with students' perceptions before and after a course on mathematical problem solving. After the course the students perceived problem relatedness more like the experts, indicating that criteria for problem perception shift as a person's knowledge bases become more richly…

Marks, Lawrence E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
In a series of four experiments, subjects used scales of loudness, pitch, and brightness to evaluate the meanings of a variety of synesthetic metaphors--expressions in which words or phrases describing experiences proper to one sense modality transfer their meaning to another modality. (Author/PN)

Sergent, Justine – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Two visual search experiments suggest that: cerebral lateralization of cognitive functions results from differences in sensorimotor resolution capacities of the hemispheres; both hemispheres can process verbal and visuospatial information analytically and holistically; and respective hemispheric competence is a function of the level of…

Miller, Jeff – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
A technique is introduced to study the flow of information through processing stages in choice reaction time tasks. It was designed to determine whether response preparation can begin before stimulus identification is complete ("continuous" models) or if a stimulus must be fully identified prior to any response activation ("discrete" models).…

Pisconi, David B.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Three experiments examined the perception of a three-way voicing contrast by monolingual speakers of English. The results demonstrate that the perceptual mechanisms used by adults in categorizing stop consonants can be modified easily with simple laboratory techniques in a short period of time. (Author/PN)
