The Role of Abstract Syntactic Knowledge in Language Acquisition: A Reply to Tomasello (2000).
Fisher, Cynthia
Cognition, v82 n3 p259-78 Jan 2002
Argues that Tomasello's (2000) interpretation of young children's conservatism in language production depends on questionable premises. Reviews evidence against the assumptions, showing that children learn item-specific facts about verbs and other lexical items. Asserts that researchers must explore the interactions of lexical and more abstract syntactic knowledge in language acquisition to better understand how children learn their native languages.
