The Development of a Word-Learning Strategy.
Halberda, Justin
Cognition, v87 n1 pB23-B34 Feb 2003
Two studies investigated young infants' use of the word-learning principle Mutual Exclusivity. Findings indicated that 17-month-olds used mutual exclusivity to map novel labels to novel objects in a preferential looking paradigm, whereas 16-month-olds performed at chance levels. Fourteen-month-olds systematically increased looking to the familiar object in response to hearing the novel label; this surprising form of failure was open to several possible interpretations.
