A New Direction in Psychology and Politics
Goldstein, Evan R.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n49 pB9 Aug 2008
Jonathan Haidt remembers reading "Metaphors We Live By", the influential book that George P. Lakoff, a professor of linguistics and cognitive science at the University of California at Berkeley, wrote with Mark L. Johnson, a professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon. The book drew on cognitive science, psychology, linguistics, and philosophy to explore how metaphors, often unconsciously, play a pervasive role in everyday life, governing people's language, thought, and action. Haidt is writing a book on morality, "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion". Working on the book with Jesse Graham, a graduate student at Virginia, he has developed a model for understanding the distinct moral systems held by conservatives and liberals. This article discusses the contentions forwarded by Haidt in his book.
