"My Teacher Doesn't Like Me"
Jenkins, Rob
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n37 pC3 May 2008
Students with complaints about faculty members--baseless or otherwise--take up a great deal of a typical department head's day. This author, a department chairman for seven years, supervised close to 200 full-time and part-time faculty members, and received complaints about every single one. At least 70 percent of those complaints were of the "my teacher doesn't like me" variety from students who were convinced that their failings were actually the fault of their professors. Students have a right to complain and deserve to be heard, and the chairman's job is to determine whether the complaint is valid and then deal with it accordingly. In this article, the author shares the procedure he developed for handling most student complaints.
