The House Postsecondary Education Subcommittee called hearings to give higher education officials a chance to respond to accusations that colleges are greedy and spend as much as they can. A group of 37 college and university presidents recommended more cooperation between colleges and schools and improved training for teachers. The goal of the presidents meeting was to contemplate their role in the school-reform movement. Greater emphasis, it was suggested, must be placed on the value of teaching. (MLW)

Higher education has emerged as a big issue in Louisiana's fall election campaign. Finance, governance, admissions standards, and desegregation are discussed. In the last 6 months many private and corporate foundations have urged on colleges and universities to develop proposals to address problems posed by AIDS. Other philanthropies are helping colleges form citizens' commissions that will develop plans to prevent the spread of AIDS in their communities. Some programs are discussed. (MLW)

AIDS education is seen as the moral and ethical obligation of colleges and to be effective it must be aimed at changing behavior and repeated in different formats. The more effective the program, the more controversial it might be, because effective programs admit that there's explorational behavior by students. (MLW)

A special committee to boost the hiring of blacks in coaching and sports administration was formed by the NCAA. The committee will collect data on minority employment and identify ways to increase the pool of black coaches and administrators. (MLW)

Middle-class moderates had begun to adopt the confrontational tactics of student protesters when the ruling party in South Korea made dramatic concessions to opposition demands for direct presidential elections. It indicates that politics is beginning to bow to societal conditions. (MLW)
