Four investors have committed $8.5 million to start companies based on discoveries made at the University of Chicago and the Argonne National Laboratory. It may be the first venture-capital fund to market products flowing from a federal laboratory. Graduate student volunteers are doing most of the development work. (MSE)

A report entitled "Meeting the National Need for Minority Scholars and Scholarship" is discussed. The report found the federal government had been "ineffective" in helping to solve the problems faced by minority scholars. The Texas Academic Skills Program, a basic-skills test that all entering freshmen must pass before they can enroll in upper-level courses, is discussed. Those who fail it will be required to take non-credit remedial courses and to retake the test until they pass it. (MLW)

A lawsuit against Kinko's, a nationwide chain of photocopying stores, is expected to be filed soon. The target of the lawsuit is photocopied anthologies used by professors to supplement textbooks or to substitute for them altogether.
