Grounding Technology in Both Science and Significance
Gregorian, Vartan
Chronicle of Higher Education, v52 n16 pB3 Dec 2005
For the first time in history, technology has given each of us the means to access our own virtual Libraries. Itis fantastic that we can search the treasure house of information that is now available online, pluck out what we want-- or at least think we want-- and drop it into a computer file that we can deposit in an electronic folder. Indeed, in order to enjoy and benefit from all that technology has to offer, some of us feel no compunction about ceding a bit of our own autonomy and even privacy to seemingly "benign" technological devices. Technology is only a tool, a means to an end that we must identify and choose. An educated citizenry must always revisit and determine the aims and uses of technology on the basis of choice rather than by habit. The author argues that it is to colleges and universities to find the strength of intellect and the unshakable, incandescent yearning to "know" and to "understand" that will enlighten the future for all. Higher education institutions cannot abdicate the central role that they play, and must continue to play, in a democratic society.
