The Bottom Line for College Presidents: Money Matters
Fain, Paul; June, Audrey Williams
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n14 pB4 Nov 2006
In this article, the author presents Roger W. Bowen who was a president of the State University of New York at New Paltz, in 1996 and now a general secretary of the American Association of University Professors, that he gave almost no thought to the annual salary of $108,000. Here, his experience as an underpaid president, is familiar to governing boards and college chiefs who are wrestling with issues of presidential compensation. As pay continues to rise, and colleges increasingly engage in bidding wars to land top candidates, a frequent question is: How much should money matter to a college president? College leaders are seen as public servants, who may have forsaken careers in private industry for the less remunerative reward of educating the next generation. Furthermore, the author states that whether or not, salary is an initial draw to the profession and is becoming a higher priority for college leaders. Thus, the growing demands of the job of college president, as well as the corporate culture that has started to take root among governing boards and college administrators, have contributed to an industrywide ratcheting up of presidential salaries.
