Teaching an Old Ph.D. New Tricks
Simon, Jean
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n16 pC2 Dec 2006
In this article, the author, a former tenured professor who found her niche once she gave up the need to fit her new life into her old credentials, describes her experience in academe and how she enjoys her life now being a nationally certified massage therapist. One lesson she learned is that people outside academe quit their jobs all the time. People confront such uncertainty every day and then get on with their lives. Academics, however, seem to believe they must be secure to survive, that security is some kind of inalienable right. From her own experience, as well as from colleagues and friends, security is an illusion at best and a trap at worst.
