For the Learning Disabled, a Team Approach to College
Lipka, Sara
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n17 pA36 Dec 2006
This article describes a privately operated residential program called College Living Experience, a for-profit company, caters to a growing number of students with learning disabilities, Asperger's syndrome, and various emotional or behavioral disorders. The program has a team of full-time staff members helping students with their social and independent-living skills as well as their homework. It is designed to hold students' hands as they navigate college. Its staff members become their advocates, schedulers, therapists. All of that individualized attention is expensive, however--and it does not always help students succeed. Some experts worry that such programs attract students who should not be in college in the first place. The programs' other benefits to students with learning disabilities are further discussed.
