Award-Winning Teaching
Bollag, Burton
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n15 pA10 Dec 2006
Kenneth E. Brashier, Mark S. Lewine, Alexei V. Filippenko, and Donna C. Boyd were the four professors who won the Professors of the Year for 2006. They were chosen from nearly 300 candidates nominated by their institutions for their "outstanding commitment to teaching undergraduate students and their influence on teaching." The annual competition is sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This article presents the winners' descriptions of their teaching methods. Brashier, an associate professor religion and humanities at Reed College, stated that he used a method called "exploratory." Meanwhile, Lewine, professor of anthropology at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, claimed that he encouraged his students to dig up old inner-city churchyards. On the other hand, Filippenko, professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley, stated that at times he dresses up as a black hole during his class discussions. Lastly, Boyd, professor of forensic anthropology at Radford University in Virginia, stated that she let her students pick through human bones to give them a real feel of forensic anthropology.
