The Importance of Enforcing Alcohol Rules
Guest, Stephen M.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n39 pB10 Jun 2007
This article reports on higher education's failure to enforce rules against drinking that leads to tragedy. Like most parents of college-age children, the author was unaware of the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. It only became significant to him when local police told him and his wife that their daughter, Kristine, had died in a snowmobile accident. The events described by the investigating state-police officer were subsequently verified by the police report. Besides detailing what led to the deaths of Kristine and the intoxicated driver, statements by students and college personnel gave insights into attitudes about campus drinking. The report provided evidence that Kristine had visited a campus that was out of control. In spite of a strong law on campus alcohol use and campus safety, drinking on campuses continued unabated due to the lack of effective enforcement of the drug-free-schools statute by the Education Department. Here, the author addresses the issue of campus alcohol use and its consequences for student safety and discusses the importance of enforcing alcohol rules.
