Once Radical, a Sudanese Institution Has Changed Its Approach
Lindow, Megan
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n44 pA34 Jul 2007
Of all the Islamic universities in Sudan, none has a more controversial, and complicated history than the country's International University of Africa. The university traces its political roots to a 1989 military coup that brought to power an Islamist regime with ideological ambitions for the region. The institution began as the International Africa Center established in 1967 as a school to train young African Muslims to propagate Islam on the continent. But as the governments of the 1980s and 1990s became occupied with promoting militant Islam in neighboring Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, the institution earned a reputation for radicalism. This article describes how the university has finally cracked down on extremism and changed its approach.
