In the past few years, as issues like global warming and soaring energy costs have moved from the back offices of the company environmental adviser to the front office of the chief executive, businesses have joined students in demanding that schools pay closer attention to the issues. This article talks about business schools which have seen an explosion of interest in sustainable development. Several business schools and colleges have M.B.A. programs devoted to sustainable development. Specialized programs and courses are springing up at other business schools, as well. Despite the growing popularity of such courses, some educators feel overwhelmed by the demands on business schools to produce leaders who will take on global warming, world peace, and poverty, not to mention unfair labor practices, HIV, and childhood obesity.
