One Ad, 88 Professors, and No Apologies
Bartlett, Thomas; Lipka, Sara
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n24 pA10 Feb 2007
Last month Duke University's student newspaper published a letter signed by 17 economics professors. It said that, in the wake of the lacrosse scandal, the professors regretted the perception that Duke faculty members were prejudiced against some students. It also publicly welcomed all students--including lacrosse players--to enroll in the professors' classes. However, the letter provoked sharp responses from other professors. Much of the unbridled ire has been directed at the so-called Group of 88. That's the number of professors who signed an advertisement last April in the student newspaper. To some critics, the ad epitomized a rush to judgment by the faculty members. Certain sentences in the ad, which was signed by 88 professors, have been seized upon as proof of bias against the lacrosse players. Its signers, however, argue that the now-infamous ad has been willfully misinterpreted. Despite the furor, they have no intention of apologizing.
