Ethics and ACEI: Beginning the Conversation
Freeman, Nancy
Childhood Education, v80 n6 p332 Aug 2004
Codes of ethics are one of the important hallmarks of a profession. Along with prolonged training, specialized knowledge, and rites of passage, a code is one of the criteria that sets professionals apart from other workers (Katz & Ward, 1991). Literature describing the current focus on ethics in the workplace invariably describes codes addressing practitioners in business, health care, architecture, and other highly visible and widely respected fields. These discussions of professional ethics in the popular press, however, seldom address educators or describe codes of ethics designed to guide teachers, administrators, and others who work with children on a day-to-day basis. ACEI (Association for Childhood Education International) recently created an Ethics Committee to focus on the organization's responsibility to explore the ethical dimensions of educators' work. The members of the committee have agreed to provide leadership for the organization in this area, because they believe ACEI has a responsibility to guide members who struggle to balance the conflicting needs of children, families, teachers, and caregivers, as well as a responsibility to help them answer the difficult question, "What should a principled educator do?" This article contains the following sections relating to the establishment and work of this committee: Beginning With the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Code of Ethical Conduct; First Steps in Creating an ACEI Supplement to the NAEYC Code; and Benefits.
