Secret Buddies: Children Learning about Kindness
Riley, Jeanetta G.
Childhood Education, v82 n1 p36 Fall 2005
Teachers must be aware of the social needs that children have and create opportunities to help children learn the skills to interact with others. As teachers help children learn these skills, they are also helping children build important life skills. In this article, the author discusses an activity that she adapted from one of her first grade teachers that worked to reduce negative attitudes in her class. She then adjusted it to use with name-calling and tried it in her second grade class since some of the children insisted on calling other children names. An activity called Secret Buddies (a term coined by one of the children) to reinforce kindness and consideration is also presented.
