Solitude in the School: A Neglected Facet of Children's Development and Education
Galanaki, Evangelia
Childhood Education, v81 n3 p128 Spr 2005
The individual's capacity to be alone is the necessary condition for the experience of solitude. The capacity to be alone, a major sign of emotional maturity, enables the child to simply exist without having to react to external stimuli or act with a purpose; only in this way can the child discover his or her own personal life--that is, his or her true self. The focus of this article is solitude in the school. Having reviewed the research literature on children's aloneness understanding and experience, the author proposes a number of strategies that educators may use in order to promote children's healthy and beneficial aloneness experiences in the school.
