Embracing William, Oliver Button, and Tough Boris: Learning Acceptance from Characters in Children's Literature
Tunks, Karyn Wellhousen; McGee, Jessica
Childhood Education, v82 n4 p213 Sum 2006
One of the most reverberating social changes of the 20th century was the women's liberation movement. As new attitudes about women and their roles in society took hold, changes were made in the way in which females of all ages were represented in instructional materials, such as basal readers, curriculum materials, and tradebooks. Unfortunately, depictions of males with traditionally feminine traits or pursuing unconventional interests and careers are not met with the same fervor. In an effort to shift children's attitudes from intolerance to acceptance, the authors have developed a model for using books in the classroom depicting boys' nontraditional pursuits. This cyclical model includes four components: selecting appropriate literature, sharing books with children, discussing books in honest and sensitive ways, and finally, extending children's understanding through follow-up activities. A listing of suggested books is also presented in this article. (Contains 4 figures.)
