Birthdays and Books
Brewer, Jo Ann
Childhood Education, v82 n5 p292-I Ann 2006
No holiday is quite as special to a young child as his or her birthday. After all, a birthday is their own special day. Since birthdays are interesting to children, they are a good topic for literacy activities. Many appropriate reading and writing experiences can be offered around the topic. In this article, the author states that if teachers want to implement these activities, they will need to consider sensitive issues around family and family history for children who do not have access to their family memories. One of the ways to be sure that teachers are not asking children to participate in activities that would make them uncomfortable would be to let the children select from a variety of choices or to determine an activity for themselves. In this article, the author presents birthday books that can help teachers find just the right story that appeals to children about their own birthday or a birthday in their family.
