Low-Income Children's Academic Achievement and Participation in Out-of-School Activities in 1st Grade.
Powell, Douglas R.; Peet, Susan H.; Peet, Curtis E.
Journal of Research in Childhood Education, v16 n2 p202-11 Spr-Sum 2002
This study examined associations between children's participation in out-of-school activities and academic achievement among 60 first-graders from low-income ethnically diverse families. Regression analyses revealed that as frequency of children's participation in out-of-school activities increased from low to moderate, grades also increased. As frequency increased from moderate to high, grades decreased. Pattern held for boys but not girls in all activities. (Author/KB)
