The Effects of Native Language Books on the Pre-Literacy Skill Development of Language Minority Kindergartners.
Hancock, Dawson R.
Journal of Research in Childhood Education, v17 n1 p62-68 Fall-Win 2002
Used a quasi-experimental approach to examine whether exposure to age-appropriate books in their native language would affect pre-literacy skills development of language minority kindergartners. Found that native Spanish-speaking children exposed to Spanish-language books scored significantly higher on a pre-literacy skills tests than did their counterparts exposed to English-language books and no differently than English-speaking classmates exposed to English-language books.
