Beyond Labeling: The Role of Maternal Input in the Acquisition of Richly Structured Categories.
Gelman, Susan A.; Coley, John D.; Rosengren, Karl S.; Hartman, Erin; Pappas, Athina
Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, v63 n1 p1-148 1998
Explored how mothers convey information about category structure during naturalistic interactions. Videotaped reading-aloud sessions between mothers and toddlers; coded their interactions for explicit and implicit discussion of animal and artifact categories. Found that mothers provided a rich array of information beyond simple labeling routines, but little discussion beyond non-obvious similarities. (SD)
