Lempers, Jacques D.; Elrod, Mimi Milner – Child Development, 1983
Nursery school children and kindergarteners served as listeners in five types of communicative conditions: adequate, message-dependent inadequate, situation-dependent inadequate, listener-dependent inadequate, and speaker-dependent inadequate. Results indicate that young children's appraisal skills as listeners in referential communications…

Waters, Everett – Child Development, 1983
Discusses implications of a study of middle-class infants seen in the Ainsworth strange situation at 12.5 and 19.5 months; the investigation produced results inconsistent with the corpus of previous findings. (Author/RH)

Thompson, Ross A.; And Others – Child Development, 1983
Asserts (1) that contrary to Waters, findings affirm the importance of viewing mother-infant attachment as a dynamic relationship, responsive to family conditions, and (2) that these findings are consistent with those of other researchers. (Author/RH)

Rutter, Michael – Child Development, 1983
Argues that, in the assessment of school "effects," multiple indicators of school effectiveness are required, including scholastic attainment, classroom behavior, absenteeism, attitudes to learning, continuation in education, employment, and social functioning. Assesses empirical evidence on the extent to which schools may be effective in raising…

Dempster, Frank N.; Rohwer, William D., Jr. – Child Development, 1983
Investigates children's immediate and final recall memory as a function of grade level and presentation modality. Results obtained from 54 third, sixth, and ninth graders suggest that no conclusions can be drawn concerning levels of processing as a source of age differences. (Author/MP)

Cole, Pamela M.; Newcombe, Nora – Child Development, 1983
In a study of second graders, results supported the hypothesis that recognition memory would be disrupted when children's attention control strategy required the same cognitive operations as the task material to be studied. (Author/MP)

Foley, Mary Ann; And Others – Child Development, 1983
Demonstrated that six-year-olds performed as well as 17-year-olds in discriminating self-generated memories from memories that were the result of external presentation. However, six-year-olds were not as adept as nine-year-olds in discriminating what they had said earlier from what they had only thought. (Author/MP)

Park, Denise Cortis; James, Charles Q. – Child Development, 1983
After viewing pictures of simple objects varied in color and spatial location, first, third, and fifth graders were assessed for their abilities in automatic processing of spatial and color information. In general, no evidence was found to suggest that the processing strategies of younger children were less sophisticated than those of older…

Foorman, Barbara R.; Kinoshita, Yoshiko – Child Development, 1983
A referential communication task was used to compare the effects of linguistic structure on the encoding and decoding performances of 120 five- and seven-year-old children. Results suggested that differences in adjective ordering rules and stylistic variation affect encoding and decoding accuracy. (Author/MP)

Levin, Iris; Gilat, Izhak – Child Development, 1983
Four- and five-year-old children were asked to compare the burning times of pairs of partially synchronous lights differing in intensity, bulb size, or both. (Author/MP)

Hudson, Tom – Child Development, 1983
Young children's understanding of correspondences and numerical differences between disjoint sets was studied in three experiments. Findings appeared to restrict the theory that young children are limited to perceptually based forms of mathematical reasoning. (Author/MP)

Fuson, Karen C.; And Others – Child Development, 1983
In the first experiment, observations were made of children ages four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half years of age who were induced to use counting or matching in a Piagetian number conservation task. The spontaneous matching and counting behavior of a more mature but not yet conserving sample was investigated in the second experiment. (RH)

Lane, David M.; Pearson, Deborah A. – Child Development, 1983
Concludes that children, as well as adults, are able to expand or contract the breadth of their attentional focus in accordance with task demands. Suggests there is a developmental change in the efficiency with which a stimulus presented in an otherwise empty field can be located. (Author/RH)
