Context Effects in Young Children's Sensitivity to the Importance Level of Prose Information.
Young, Daniel R.; Schumacher, Gary M.
Child Development, v54 n6 p1446-56 Dec 1983
Preschool children were presented with short passages in either a story or a communication context. In the first experiment, recall according to importance level was ascertained; in the second, metacognitive awareness of importance level was evaluated. Six-year-olds demonstrated some metacognitive awareness of importance level. Developmental differences in the impact of context on metacognitive awareness were indicated. (Author/RH)
