Knowing about Guessing and Guessing about Knowing: Preschoolers' Understanding in Indeterminacy.
Fay, Anne Louise; Klahr, David
Child Development, v67 n2 p689-716 Apr 1996
Investigated preschoolers' ability to distinguish between determinate situations--in which the available evidence eliminates all uncertainty about an outcome--and indeterminate situations. Found that preschoolers readily give "can tell" responses to determinate problems, and "can't tell" responses when they think it appropriate. Different children used different strategies to process determinate evidence, which in turn predicted performance on indeterminate problems. (HTH)
