Economic Hardship and the Development of Five- and Six-Year-Olds: Neighborhood and Regional Perspectives.
Chase-Lansdale, P. Lindsay; Gordon, Rachel A.
Child Development, v67 n6 p3338-67 Dec 1996
Compared neighborhood variables, based on census data, to child outcomes for 5- and 6-year olds. Found that neighborhood structural aspects were associated with child development; neighborhood factors played a role in cognitive and socioemotional outcomes; and higher neighborhood SES and racial homogeneity were related to children's higher cognitive functioning in the Northeast and Midwest.
