Stylistic Variation at the "Single-Word" Stage: Relations between Maternal Speech Characteristics and Children's Vocabulary Composition and Usage.
Pine, Julian M.; Lieven, Elena V. M.; Rowland, Caroline F.
Child Development, v68 n5 p807-19 Oct 1997
Examined relationships between early vocabulary composition, early language use, and properties of mothers' child-directed speech at 10 words. Found that, when the effects of the child on the mother at 10 words was controlled, there was a negative correlation between mothers' production of speech illustrating word boundaries and the percentage of unanalyzed phrases at 50 and 100 words.
