The Relationship between Language and Cognitive Development and Emotional-Behavioral Problems in Financially-Disadvantaged Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Investigation.
Gilliam, Walter S.; de Mesquita, Paul B.
Early Child Development and Care, v162 p9-24 Jun 2000
Examined the relationship between language and cognitive development and emotional-behavioral problems (measured concurrently and at a 5- and 17-month follow-up) in 680 nonreferred 4-year-olds from financially-disadvantaged families. Found that language delays were significantly related to emotional-behavioral problems. When cognitive differences were controlled, language delays no longer significantly predicted emotional-behavior problems, either concurrently or at follow-up. (Author/KB)
