The Development of Display Rule Knowledge: Linkages with Family Expressiveness and Social Competence.
Jones, Diane Carlson; Cumberland, Amanda; Abbey, Belynda Bowling
Child Development, v69 n4 p1209-22 Aug 1998
Two studies investigated emotional-display-rule knowledge and its associations with family expressiveness and peer competence. Findings indicated that third graders combined expression regulation with prosocial reasoning, norm-maintenance, and self-protective motives more frequently than kindergartners. Negative expressiveness was related positively to self-protective display rules and negatively to prosocial rules. Prosocial rules were related to conflict responses and social competence. (Author)
