Knowledge Conveyed in Gesture Is Not Tied to the Hands.
Garber, Philip; Alibali, Martha Wagner; Goldin-Meadow, Susan
Child Development, v69 n1 p75-84 Feb 1998
Investigated whether fourth-graders' gestures convey knowledge self-recognizable in another context. Identified math problem-solving procedures conveyed gesturally and examined whether the procedures could be accessed by the same child on a task not involving gesture. Children rated higher those solutions derived from procedures they conveyed uniquely in gesture than those solutions derived from procedures they did not convey at all. (Author/KB)
