Adolescent-Parent Conflict in Middle-Class African American Families.
Gaines, Cheryl; Smetana, Judith
Child Development, v70 n6 p1447-63 Nov-Dec 1999
Examined conflicts between middle-class African American preadolescents/early adolescents and their parents. Found that conflicts were relatively frequent, of low intensity, and occurred over issues such as the adolescent's room, chores, activity choices, and homework. Early adolescents rated conflicts as more intense than preadolescents. Mothers' and families' ratings differed by family income. Adolescent concession to parents declined with age. (Author/KB)
