Cultural Differences in Maternal Beliefs and Behaviors: A Study of Middle-Class Anglo and Puerto Rican Mother-Infant Pairs in Four Everyday Situations.
Harwood, Robin L.; Schoelmerich, Axel; Schulze, Pamela A.; Gonzalez, Zenaida
Child Development, v70 n4 p1005-16 Jul-Aug 1999
Examined cultural patterning in situational variability in mother-infant interactions among middle-class Anglo and Puerto Rican mothers and 12- to 15-month-old firstborns. Found that the emphasized socialization goals and childrearing strategies were consonant with individualistic orientations for Anglo mothers and sociocentric orientations for Puerto Rican mothers. Situational variability showed a cultural patterning consistent with long-term socialization goals and childrearing beliefs. (Author/KB)
