Child-Directed Speech Produced by Mothers with Symptoms of Depression Fails To Promote Associative Learning in 4-Month-Old Infants.
Kaplan, Peter S.; Bachorowski, Jo-Anne; Zarlengo-Strouse, Patricia
Child Development, v70 n3 p560-70 May-Jun 1999
Child-directed speech segments produced by mothers of 2- to 6-month olds varying in self-reported depressive symptoms were assessed on a summation test with 4-month olds of nondepressed mothers. Significant positive summation was obtained in infants tested with speech produced by mothers with comparatively fewer self-reported depressive symptoms but not when using speech samples produced by mothers with more depressive symptoms.
