The Ontogeny of Phonological Categories and the Primacy of Lexical Learning in Linguistic Development.
Beckman, Mary E.; Edwards, Jan
Child Development, v71 n1 p240-49 Jan-Feb 2000
Presents evidence from studies on adults' language processing and children's language acquisition that the lexicon is at the core of grammatical generalizations at several levels of representation. Proposes that phonological acquisition might provide the bootstrapping into grammatical generalization in general. Concludes that age-appropriate models of how lexicon influences children's interactions with the ambient language during phonological acquisition are needed. (Author/KB)
