Economic Well-Being and Children's Social Adjustment: The Role of Family Process in an Ethnically Diverse Low-Income Sample.
Mistry, Rashmita S.; Vandewater, Elizabeth A.; Huston, Aletha C.; McLoyd, Vonnie C.
Child Development, v73 n3 p935-51 May-Jun 2002
Evaluated a family economic stress model that links economic well-being to child well-being among African American and Hispanic children from low-income families, mostly headed by single mothers. Found that lower economic well-being adversely impacted parent's psychological well-being; these parents felt less effective in disciplinary interactions and were less affectionate, which in turn predicted lower teacher ratings of children's positive social behavior and behavior problems.
