Cross-Cultural Similarities in the Predictors of Reading Acquisition.
McBride-Chang, Catherine; Kail, Robert V.
Child Development, v73 n5 p1392-1407 Sep-Oct 2002
Compared reading development among kindergartners in Hong Kong and the United States using measures of word recognition, phonological awareness, speeded naming, visual spatial skill, and processing speed. Found that models of early reading development were similar across cultures. The strongest predictor of reading was phonological awareness. Speed of processing strongly predicted speeded naming, visual processing, and phonological awareness. (JPB)
