Continuing education instructors (n=65) developed and analyzed metaphors for their self-image as practitioners. Metaphor themes included adventure guides, outfitters, firestarters, and caregivers. Responses from 179 Canadian continuing education staff found that 55% were over 45; 35% had more than five years experience; 78% were in tenure-track positions; 62% were women, who had 52% of deanships. Men were significantly more likely to have tenure, hold academic rank, and have more experience. (SK)

In a survey, 50 continuing education faculty expressed concern about setting the right climate in the first session of a course. They attempt to balance students' needs and concerns with course and content issues.
