A "transitivity" analysis within a systematic functional grammar is used to explore what the discourse of reading lessons looks like in one secondary school context and to examine what is being communicated about the culture of schooling. After a review of systems for analyzing classroom talk, an approach for a more refined system of classifying classroom discourse is presented based on a study of 20 final year English-as-a-Second-Language student teachers.
