Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v12 n5 Sep-Oct 2004
In industry, performance evaluations allow employees and supervisors to share their thoughts on how the other is doing. But how does a board evaluate the performance of its directors or trustees, especially a nonprofit board composed of volunteers? In higher education, there is no profit measure or stock price to track. The Board of Trustees of Our Lady of the Lake University has solved this problem by using an annual "Self-Evaluation Report Card," which allows the board to evaluate how individual board members rate themselves. This article describes the Self-Evaluation Report Card, and the effects it has had on board members' performance since its inception.
