Academic Leadership Is Not a Piece of Cake
Trachtenberg, Stephen Joel
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v13 n4 Jul-Aug 2005
In this article, the author explains that the distinction between leaders and managers is a false one: leaders must manage their personnel and resources, and managers need to lead the people who work for them. He describes the ways in which this is true for a university president, sharing his personal experiences as the president of George Washington University and presenting effective habits, necessary skills, and a variety of styles that may help university presidents succeed in both roles.
