Tenure: No Credibility without Accountability
Estes, Howell M., III
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v15 n1 Jan-Feb 2007
In recent years, tenure has increasingly come under fire as an anachronism, not only for appearing to be out of touch with modern society but also as protection for the allegedly incompetent. Administrators and governing boards find themselves spending inordinate time defending it. So, in March 2005, the University of Colorado took the unprecedented step of launching a comprehensive, systematic review of its tenure-related processes. In this article, the author describes the tenure review process at Colorado and the results of the study, which found that the tenure processes do many things right if they are followed, but that there are some gaps and implementation is not always as rigorous as it should be. The final report's recommendations for ongoing tenure review are presented.
