This booklet is designed "to reinforce the thesis that the committee on trustees must perform with excellence if the board as a whole is to fulfill its responsibilities with distinction. The author outlines a typical committee mission, structure, responsibilities, and policies and practices. Ten committee responsibilities are described, such as: (1) designing the board composition and statement of criteria; (2) cultivating a network of trustee candidates; (3) managing orientation programs, and keeping former trustees involved; (4) motivating trustees and assessing their performance; (5) analyzing future board talent needs; and (6) ensuring the bylaws accurately reflect current policies and practice of the board. Illustrative bylaw language for the committee on trustees is included. Appended are: (1) Illustrative Bylaw Language for the Committee on Trustees; (2) Board Talent Inventory Worksheet; and (3) Trustee Self-Assessment (End of First Year). (Contains 5 resources.)
