Don't Turn Off Good Candidates
Dowdall, Jean A.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v12 n1 Jan-Feb 2004
When colleges and universities seek new presidents and chancellors, search committee members and consultants usually focus on their responsibility to make judgments about the candidates. The competition for the strongest candidates can be fierce and fast. The search committee will be striving to attract these candidates by telling a compelling story about the institution, and the board can be a critical element in that story. In supporting the effort to attract strong candidates, how can board members make the best possible case for themselves as outstanding partners in leading the institution? What characteristics of boards do candidates scrutinize, which are red flags, and which are significant attractions? A board that is anticipating or currently working on a presidential search may want to take a hard look at these items and consider how to enhance its attractiveness to candidates. This article provides guidance in answering some of these questions.
