This paper considers the potential of technology in education, examines what it means to "integrate" technology in the classroom, outlines barriers to technology integration, and considers several implications for effective technology use. It begins by noting doubts regarding computer use in schools and outlining the potential of computers. Next, it defines the term "integration" and examines various levels of educational technology use. Subsequently, it considers the idea of integration through the use of the metaphor of human rights; learning from the barriers and problems of the Civil Rights Movement. Barriers to computer integration into the curriculum are examined. The paper concludes with several implications of observations that are intended to guide teacher education and support professional development for in-service teachers.
